Start Word, go to 'Word Preferences' and click on 'File Locations.' If the Startup folder is set to any location, highlight 'Startup' and click on 'Reset.' Click 'OK' and Quit Word. Start EndNote and then start Word. If the tools are still not present, they may not have been installed. Double-click Install EndNote 20. A new box opens: select Install. 1. To install EndNote X9, you must be an administrator on your computer. Please begin by closing all Microsoft programs, including Outlook and Word. 2. For users upgrading from an older version of EndNote, please make sure your libraries are saved in a file location separate from the EndNote program folder (usually C:ProgramFilesEndNote). Uninstall older versions of EndNote.
3. The EndNote install link you see below will download a zipped file into your downloads folder. You will have to unzip the file before you can run the installer; if you do not unzip the file, the installer will not be able to read the license information and will ask you for a license number or ask you to install a trial version.
4. To unzip the file, go to your downloads folder and right click the zipped EndNote folder. Look for an option that says Extract all and click it. This step takes a few minutes; the extract may not respond right away but try to give it a little time to work. When you see a progress bar, you will know you're on your way.
5. The unzipped folder will open automatically; double click on the icon named ENX9Inst. Follow the Installer prompts to install EndNote.
6. Once the Installer is finished, you will find EndNote by clicking the Start/Windows button. You can pin it to your task bar by right clicking and selecting 'Pin to Taskbar.'
7. The first time you open EndNote, you will encounter a gray screen. Create your library by clicking File>New and choosing a name and a local file location; do not store EndNote libraries in remote locations such as Dropbox.

EndNote is also available from the Software Center which may be available on your UMMS provided computer

NOTE: There was a compatibility issue with EndNote X7 and the MacIntosh OS Sierra which has been corrected in the latest version X8.

A Cite While You Write patch is available for EndNote X7 that addresses the compatibility issue with Office 2016/Office 365 on Macintosh [the Endnote toolbar tab not appearing in the Word menu]. The patch will become automatically available after successful installation of X7.

First, try rebooting your computer. If that does not work, try the following:

• Install the EndNote update(s) from http://endnote.com/support/enupdates.asp

• Open EndNote, and go to the EndNote menu. Select Customizer from the EndNote menu. Check the box in front of the Cite While You Write option. Click next until the Customizer is finished. Open a library. Then open Word and check the Tools menu for the EndNote submenu.

1. Close Word and EndNote.
2. Open your hard drive and go to the folder: EndNote X-: Applications:EndNote X-:Cite While You Write
3. Copy the file EndNote CWYW Word 2011.bundle
4. Go to the folder Applications:Microsoft Office 2011:Office:Startup:Word and paste the copied file
5. Start Word, go to Word > Preferences and click on File Locations
6. Make sure the Startup folder is set by highlighting Startup and clicking on Modify. Select the folder Applications:Microsoft Office 2011:Office:Startup:Word and click Choose
7. Click OK and close Word.
8. Start EndNote and then start Word.

If the tools still do not appear:

• Change Word Preferences so it will not automatically open up the document gallery (which can prevent EndNote from connecting)
